Why autumn is a crucial time for sorting out your sleep

Did you know that autumn is a very disruptive time when it comes to sleep patterns? Sussex Beds at Newnham Court Shopping Village has its autumn sale on right now, so take the opportunity to find your perfect mattress and use the following six tips to get the best night's sleep.

Autumn is very hard on those who have trouble sleeping. The transition to dark mornings and dark evenings can lead to disrupted sleep patterns, and it’s when SAD (seasonal affective disorder) is at its peak, so it’s more important than ever to make sure you’re doing everything you an to ensure you get the best night’s sleep…

Tips to getting a good night’s sleep:

  1. Expose yourself to light. A good night’s sleep starts in the morning. When your pineal gland is exposed to light, your internal body clock resets and our hormones regulate. So make your home as bright as possible in the morning. Open those curtains and get outside for an early walk in the fresh air.
  2. Avoid exercise before bed! This increases your internal body temperature and cortisol (our stress hormone) in the body which puts us in the opposite state that we want to be in for sleeping!
  3. Avoid stimulants like coffee, alcohol and some fizzy drinks, which all contain compounds that stimulate our nervous system. Did you know that one cup of coffee remains in your bloodstream for 6-8 hours? Also worth knowing that Adenosine (a sleep-inducing chemical in the brain) is increased after drinking alcohol, so while you often fall asleep after a couple of glasses of wine, you’ll wake up again in the middle of the night because adenosine also disappears really quickly which leads to disrupted sleep.
  4. Avoid Blue Light from laptops, phones, TV’s and tablets. Blue light stimulates the pineal gland, making your body think it’s time to wake up rather than wind down.
  5. Get into a rhythm. Try to got to bed and wake up at the same time every night for a week to reset your body clock. Circadian rhythm is all about routine. Don't snooze on the sofa and don't snooze your alarm either!
  6. Get a good mattress that suits your body. Everyone is different, so it’s important to choose a mattress size, filling and structure that suits your own body. We do after all spend over 1/3 of our lives in our beds!!
