From humble beginnings in 1927, Cats Protection has grown to become the UK’s leading feline welfare charity. In 2014, they helped over 205,000 cats and kittens through their network of over 250 volunteer-run branches and 32 adoption centres.

In April 2016 Cats Protection opened a new Homing & Information Centre based at Newnham Court Shopping Village in Maidstone.

This is only their second homing and information centre following the success of their first centre at the Pets at Home store in Newbury, Berkshire and it is hoped the charity will establish many more centres like this across the UK in the near future.

The Newnham Court Shopping Village, Maidstone centre houses five large cat pens and the aim is to home over 150 cats each year. The centre also provides an interactive experience for visitors who will not only see the cats housed at the Centre, but can also search the Cat Protection Find-a-cat database on screens and tablets for other cats in the local area.

The aim is to find more homes for unwanted and abandoned cats in Maidstone and surrounding areas and educate a wider audience about responsible cat ownership. The centre is set in its own area thus minimising stress to the cats and will have five large pens which have been custom-built to welfare standards.

Potential adopters go through the same process as they would if adopting from the Cats Protection Bredhurst Adoption Centre and the welfare of the cats in their care is of the upmost importance. When someone registers an interest in homing a cat, they make sure that the cat is right for that person, their family, home, lifestyle and plans for the future. The cat is reserved and there is a 24-hour period before an appointment for collection is arranged.

This new Maidstone branch currently requires a number of volunteers to help run the centre. If you could spare some time to help, please get in contact with the Bredhurst Rehoming Centre on 01634 232471. Watch the video below to see how you could contribute.
